My motivation in starting this website is to
be a tribute to one of the most outstanding people I have ever been acquainted
with. That person is
Destiny Lagrand. I have
known many outstanding people in my lifetime, and I can honestly say that I have
never met anyone as awe inspiring at such a young age as she is.
At 17 she has managed to accomplish more in
her lifetime than many people far senior to her
As a junior in Thunderbird High School taking all accelerated or
advanced placement classes Destiny is the Feature Twirler in the Thunderbird
Marching Chiefs Band, and a member of the National Honor Society, while maintaining
a GPA of 3.8. Her main extracurricular activity is being the senior member of
Arizona Twirling Athletes
which not only includes training for her personal events
but team events as well. Destiny's hard work has paid off for she is a nationally ranked
baton twirler and member of a nationally ranked baton twirling team.
Destiny is also an inspiring student teacher for her younger teammates who
look up to her as a role model.
Destiny was 1st runner up in the 2005 Miss
Arizona Outstanding Teen Pageant (part of the Miss America organization),
and is also listed in the 2006 Who’s Who Among American High School Students.
It is not just her accomplishments but her character which I find
most awe inspiring. There will be more added here in the coming days but for
now just know that she is a remarkable young lady.
Destiny hanging out with some Baton Twirling Buddies and coaches
Baton twirling is both a team and individual sport.
The other goal of this site is to promote the sport of baton twirling, and increase awareness
of this often overlooked sport.
I once asked Destiny how much twirling had affected her life. Her answer somewhat suprised me.
She said something like "baton twirling has meant everything". Destiny believes that baton twirling has been an integral
key to her life. Now I have known that twirling has made a big difference in her life but I never would have thought that it was
everything.
I've had discussions with Destiny's mom before about the benefits of baton twirling, but nothing makes it hit
home more than experiencing it live and in person.
One night I was sitting in the bleachers at Thunderbird High School getting ready to take video of Destiny who was
twirling at a football game halftime with the band. Under the bleachers along with alot of other kids I could
overhear two girls talking, in the few minutes of conversation I overheard they talked about how they were going
to get wasted after the game and go party with their boyfriends. I think thats when it first hit me. What a
difference baton twirling has made in her life.
